At a distance of 75 km from Kullu, 63 km from Bhuntar, 113 km from Manali and 14 km from Gushaini, The Great Himalayan National Park (GHNP) is spread across Parvati valley, Thirthan valley, Sainj valley & Jiwa Nal valley of Kullu region. In June 2014, the Park was declared as UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Great Himalayan National Park is one of best national parks in India and also one of the best Places to visit in Himachal state. The park was established in 1984 and is spread over an area of 754 sq km at an altitude varying between 1500 to 6000 m. GHNP was formally declared a national park in 1999. The GHNP is situated adjacent Pin Valley National Park, Rupi-Bhaba Wildlife Sanctuary and the Tirthan and Sainj Wildlife Sanctuaries, making it one of the biggest areas for wildlife conservation in the whole Himalayan range.
The Park is habitat to numerous flora and more than 375 fauna species including approximately 31 species of mammals and 181 species of birds. More than 15,000 residents of 160 villages in the buffer zone are dependent on GHNP's natural resources. The fauna of the park includes some of the most exotic species of animals like snow leopard, blue sheep, Himalayan brown bear, Himalayan tahr, musk deer, goral and many others. The bird species found in GHNP include golden eagles, Himalayan griffon vultures, lammergeyers, raptors, etc.
There are no roads that lead directly to the Park boundary, access is by foot mainly through its western boundary. The park has four main entry points; Gushaini (40 km from Aut) is the road head for trekking in the Tirthan Valley, Neuli (40 km from Aut) is where trekking trails in Sainj valley start. Siund village (30 km from Aut) is the starting point for treks in the Jiwanala Valley and Barshaini is preferred starting point for the trek up to Mantalai and the Pin - Parvati Pass in Parvati valley.
Trekking is the only way to enjoy and explore the Great Himalayan National Park. The park offers hikes and treks, ranging from one day to 8 days. Adventure seekers can also participate in activities
Also known as “Auli Bugyal” which means meadow, Auli is a lesser known skiing destination located about 394 kms from Delhi. Apart from skiing, the highest man-made lake is located right next to the Clifftop Club Hotel.
Surrounded by high peaks like Mana, Kamet and the tallest of them all, Nanda Devi, Auli gives one a feeling of utter bliss, spirituality and solitude that led to it being named as “Devbhumi” or the land of Gods. It is quite pleasant in summers to visit Auli when temperatures are quite pleasant. It evokes a feeling of oneness and fulfillment that every couple should experience together.
It is an isolated and ancient village in Kullu valley that is located at an elevation of 3,029 meters and can only be accessed on foot. The Malana trek, which is a 4-5 days of trek from Manali, passes through the Chandrakhani Pass at 3660 meters, which is accessible from Chiklani at 2370 meters after crossing Rumsu via Naggar. Malana preserves a rich indigenous culture and is dotted with a small cluster of around two hundred stone roof houses.
On a tour of Leh, either starting from Manali or while returning to Manali, Sarchu is a major halt where properly arranged camping settlement can be seen. To relax, to just roam around or to sleep peacefully under the stars, Sarchu is a significant point in Ladakh region. It is on the border of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir on the Leh-Manali Highway. The travelers from Manali to Leh will have to face some off-road conditions and two days will be required to reach Leh on the journey, hence people will choose Sarchu as a halt station. Near the Tsarap Chu River, one can see the camps arranged by the Indian Army as well. But during winter season, the highway and Sarchu camps would be remaining closed as the altitude passes will not be accessible due to the presence of heavy snow.Mainly, the trekking of Ladakh starts from Sarchu because the continuing journey from Manali to Leh would be tiring and the trekkers cannot start the expedience all of a sudden. So an overnight stay in Sarchu will give energy and more enthusiasm to start the walk early morning. The tents are proper and safe with all the facilities an overnight resident would require. There are 25 Swiss tent cottages and 15 luxury tent cottages which are made of canvas so that it would prevent the tents from wind and rain. Inside the tent, you can see twin beds, a center table with lamp and a pair of chair. You will be provided with thick mattress, pillow, bed sheet, quilt and a blanket. There are attached toilets and a dining tent which is well furnished. It can accommodate sixty pax at a time.
Location: Sarchu is between Baralacha La to the south and Lachulung La to the north and 220 kms away from Manali. You can reach Sarchu if you take a drive along Leh- Manali Highway.
Best time to visit: The months from June to October are considered the best time to reach Sarchu.
